How to Select Great Retirement Gifts
admin | December 5, 2007Do you have a co-worker that is retiring and you have to come up with the perfect retirement gift? What do you give someone who has worked at a company for many years? There are a variety of good ideas that will help you select the perfect retirement gifts from yourself or from a whole group of co-workers.
First, when selecting retirement gifts, consider your audience. Is your retiring co-worker planning on taking several months to tour Europe like she always wanted to as a younger woman? If so, perhaps your gift should be tailored to her new retired life. Buy the traveling co-worker a new set of luggage, a variety of travel guide books, or the latest in carry-on gear.
If your co-worker is staying at home, great retirement gifts may speak to your knowledge of her favorite pastimes. Does she love to garden? Buy her a gardening cart and a gift card to her favorite home and garden center. Is she planning on spending time writing the novel she always mean to write during her working years but never had time to complete? Good retirement gifts may include a series of books on writing effectively, novel writing software, and a beautiful leather bound journal for her musings.
The bottom line with most good retirement gifts is that they should be as personal as you can make them, and they should celebrate the new life the retiree will begin when he or she is no longer working. Golf clubs for an avid golfer, a set of high end cookware for the baker in your office, and so forth.
If you know less about your retiree, because you are new to the office, or your co-worker is not as open about his or her post-retirement plans, you may want a more general retirement gift. This can still be done with class, as you can give a memento of your workplace. Think about giving the retiree a beautiful clock, along with a note about not having to watch it anymore to be on time for department meetings!
